What's great about researching candombe in Montevideo is that most days I don't even have to try. It's possible to just stumble upon something, as was the case today in front of the English church in Ciudad Vieja.
Candombe, by Pedro Figari
I'm guessing the group is associated with Grupo Bantú, since Tomás Olivera Chirimini was there. I also recognized "Perico" Gularte playing the repique (center of photo). What I love about this group is that they look as if they just walked out of a Pedro Figari painting.
This was a lucky day where I actually take a camera out while just going for a walk. Most often I don't. The short video shows a little of the performance, followed by a little explanation (in Spanish) of candombe's African roots. Chirimini assures those listening that regardless of similarities with other African-based musical styles, this rhythm belongs to Uruguay.
